A time for inspired leadership

There has been debate over the past week or so on the MGSA group and via comments in the SAMAA BLOG. It concerns the direction of the SAMAA into the future.
I hear that the government is reviewing all sporting aviation activities in South Africa. Model flying is included.
If this is so, now may be the time for SAMAA to act to protect the interests of its members. There is no suggestion of this, but pandering to the government of the day may be a mistake.
Governments come and go. The SAMAA has been around for nearly a quarter of a century.
Decisions by the SAMAA committee must be open and frank. Members must have every chance to comment.

I absolutely agree with you John. It is interesting that Joe Coetzer is prepared to have dialog with members on the MGASA forum but not on the SAMAA blog? In one of his replies he states that:
“ I am getting a letter from Aero Club, following interaction with the CAA, which will CLEARLY confirm SAMAA’s powers and legal right to control all model flying activities in the RSA.”
So I was right when I said we have no authority. But it will take more then a letter to confirm the above mentioned. And If we eventually get this nose legally around our necks, how are we ever going to get rid of it when we realise that we been suckered into doing a government department’s dirty work for free. Maybe we will pay our leader “clowns” for every free loader they catch with the extra money we will be extorting from “new” members.
